var inter = 'Helen Lucas, painter and friend in conversation with Beverley Richardson, March, 2006
Helen: I am so excited by what you are doing in your studio. It has been wonderful to watch the evolution of your work. For me, your landscapes are the most powerful. Tell me about Motherland.
    Beverley: I grew up with the golden grain fields, rich black earth and wide open blue skies of the Canadian Prairies all around me. Walking through frosted winter forests to school, skating along frozen country streams, riding horse back along miles of power line; these are rich memories that are with me still.
Helen: Did you paint as a child?
    Beverley: I adored Presto Paints and Spirographs! My passion for colour and texture grew when I began creating doll clothes on a toy sewing machine. I continued creating and working with fashion up until having children. When I was a mother of three, living in Toronto, I returned to university. Peter Kolysnyk’s creativity course, Line & Form, captivated me and I began training as an Expressive Arts Therapist at ISIS Canada while I concurrently continued university studies. Although I was able to take several studio courses at York University, I am largely self taught as an artist. I carried on to complete a Masters in Expressive Arts Therapy at the European Graduate School in Switzerland.
Helen: Did you start out working in oils?
    Beverley: My fist painting, In the Light, was done with latex house paint and a roller. My earlier works are abstracts in watercolor and charcoal, a few acrylics, and some sculptural and installation pieces. I have been working with oils for the past eight years.
Helen: What do you hope most to communicate with your work?
    Beverley: My love affair with nature! Throughout my life, nature has been my sanctuary. Outdoors, time slows down and I draw closer to my own inner nature. I enjoy feeling the warm sun, or the sharpness of a windy rain on my cheeks. My paintings are meditations. I love spending time with them and contemplating them as I create them. The need to rush and the worries of daily life fall away. I hope the sense of wonder and comfort I feel comes through my brush and onto the canvas.
Helen: What’s next?
    Beverley: I have been experimenting with gicleé reproduction which I hope will make my work more widely available. For the first time, I will do a showing of original works that will be available for purchase. The show will be held in July at Sunset Gallery in Kenora, Ontario and proceeds will benefit Saakaate House Women's Shelter, also of Kenora. And more painting! I want to continue to build a body of work that can inspire us to cherish and protect our natural world and wide open spaces.

The work of Helen Lucas can be viewed at www.helenlucas.com';
